LE TREND:
A POP OF RED
A little red or a lot of red, the choice is yours. I like the idea of a simple button down, like this Sezane Tomboy shirt, that’s embroidered with little pops of color. This shirt is amazing and so petite-friendly, I could, and probably should, write a whole post about it. I will. Hold me to it. This shirt and a pair of jeans, trousers, skirt, whatever, and you’ve done your part - you’re trendy and cool and popping red. This small-dose idea can also be achieved in accessories - a clutch, baseball cap, shoe, socks - adding any of these to your outfit allows you to safely test any trend, but especially a bright color-trend, and see if it’s for you. You can always level-up and layer-on later.
SEEING RED
The de facto “it” color of the season, red is popping up seemingly everywhere.
I didn’t even realize I liked red that much until my Instagram feed was full of effortless cool Parisian girls donning dark red socks, poppy red hair bows, and cherry scarves draped oh-so-effortlessly over their shoulders. But the more I saw it the more I liked it. Scratch that - I don’t think I hated red to begin with. My closet was harboring some tomato-hued gems for years, I guess I just never thought I was too trendy when I did wear them. Now that they are cool, here’s how I’m doing it.
It starts with the right hue. For me, the bright tomato, almost red-orange palate is the color for me. Happy red, playful and unserious.
Also can we talk about how cardigans draped over your shoulders is cool? When was it originally cool? Is this an old money trend? Quiet luxury? Are those the same thing? I’m going off topic. Anyway - I kinda love the casualness but also the chicness of a cardi worn like a scarf; I’ve wore it a few times and each time, I feel very cool.
I think the size of the cardigan and the fabric really matter if you’re into trying this style. I grabbed a form-fitting, cashmere cardigan from Everlane for this look and the smaller size meant it didn’t overwhelm my small frame, and the cashmere kept it feeling sleeker rather than chunky. I simply folded the cardigan kinda into thirds and slung it over my shoulders. Bonus points if you tie the sleeves casually in a knot - don’t know why I didn’t do this but I should have. A burgundy clutch plays with color layering - it’s in the family of red but the dark hue adds depth.
For bottoms, kept it simple with dark grey acid wash straight-leg jeans from Boyish. It’s the red we’re looking to highlight here, so the denim is just your natural canvas for everything else to pop from. Same theory with the flats - nude, so they blend seamlessly with the look.
